Sports Opportunities

At Middlestone Moor Primary Academy, we believe that sport plays a vital role in supporting children’s wellbeing, confidence, and personal development. Our PE curriculum is designed to be inclusive, engaging, and progressive – ensuring every child has the opportunity to discover activities they enjoy while developing the key skills needed for lifelong participation in sport.

Our PE curriculum is carefully structured to meet the needs of all children. Each year group takes part in a broad range of activities, allowing pupils to explore different types of movement, team play, and physical challenges. Lessons are tailored so that every child can succeed, whatever their starting point. Children experience a variety of sporting areas, including:

Gymnastics

Building control, balance, coordination, and flexibility.

Striking and Fielding Games

Such as rounders and cricket, helping develop teamwork, timing, and tactical thinking.

Net and Wall Games

Including tennis and badminton, developing accuracy, agility, and strategy.

Outdoor Adventurous Activity (OAA)

Encouraging problem‑solving, resilience, and cooperation in outdoor settings.

Dance

Allowing children to express themselves through movement, rhythm, and creativity.

Athletics

Improving stamina, strength, throwing, jumping, and running skills.

Our curriculum is progressive, meaning it builds year on year. Children revisit and refine skills, deepening their understanding and becoming increasingly confident in a wide range of sports.

Swimming in Key Stage 2

Swimming is a crucial life skill. All Key Stage 2 children attend swimming sessions with the aim of meeting the National Curriculum requirement of swimming 25 metres competently, confidently, and safely. We support every child regardless of experience, ensuring they feel secure and encouraged in the water.

After School Sports Clubs

Sport doesn’t stop when the school day ends! We offer sports clubs every night of the week, giving children additional opportunities to stay active, develop new interests, and build friendships. Clubs vary throughout the year and may include football, gymnastics, multi‑skills, dance, athletics, and more.

Whole School Sports Week

One of the highlights of our calendar is Sports Week, a special celebration of physical activity and teamwork. Every child takes part in a wide range of exciting sports—many of which they may never have tried before. It’s a week filled with fun, challenge, and new experiences, helping children discover new passions and build confidence.

We are proud of the sporting opportunities we offer and believe that every child should feel successful, supported, and enthusiastic about being physically active. Through a rich curriculum and a variety of extracurricular clubs and events, our aim is to create a positive sporting culture across our school. We celebrate the sporting success of our pupils both at school and outside of school with a celebratory newsletter each term.
