Autumn Term Diary Dates

Daily Routine

We open our doors at 8.45am each morning, and close them at 8.55am ready to welcome the children into school to start their day. We love joining in with our ‘Danny Go’ movement and music routines to improve our gross motor control, co-ordination and fitness!

Our mornings begin with registration, choosing our lunches and changing our class calendar. We then take part in our Sounds-Write lesson which is when learn how to read and write. Afterwards, our Reception children have free access to the various areas within the classroom and outside, where a range of exciting, engaging and stimulating activities are set up so that the children can learn through their play. The adults in the setting join the children in their play supporting their learning and leading focused group-time activities. Our Year 1 children also access these areas, in addition to completing their English and Maths tasks each day.

Before lunch, we enjoy our English session which is usually centred around a story. We then wash our hands and go for our lunch.

In the afternoons, we have a quick reading session followed by a whole class activity to develop our knowledge and skills in all of the curriculum areas. Like in the mornings, all of our children then access the provision inside and outside of the classroom. During the afternoon, we are supported and challenged in the areas by the adults. Our Year 1 pupils also complete their learning tasks in other curriculum areas.

We finish each day with stories, rhymes and songs before heading home at 3.15pm.

Home Learning in Reception

We believe that links to home are so important and play a vital role in a child’s learning journey and encourage parents to become involved from the very start.

We use an app called SeeSaw which allows communication between home and school and allows parents to have an insight into their child’s learning and development at school.  It is also a pleasure to hear about our children’s adventures at home too!

We also send some learning to practise at home each week. This should be completed in short bursts, with lots of praise and encouragement for the children’s efforts.

Sounds-Write –  All children have a ‘Symbol Search’ grid which should be used to practise identifying the letters and the sounds they make. They may then use a whiteboard pen to trace the letters. The weekly sounds are included in the home school diary.

Reading Books – Children’s decodable reading books (once they begin reading) and ‘Sharing’ texts are changed every Friday. Please ensure that their reading folder and diary is in school so that they can be changed. Your child’s decodable is closely matched to your child’s phonic ability so they should be able to ‘Say the sounds to read the words…’ with a little encouragement. The ‘Sharing’ text will need to be read to your child for you to enjoy together.

Spellings – Children are expected to complete a set of 3-5 spellings per week. Spellings are personalised for each child and they need to be able to read and write each word. These spellings are either Year 1 or Year 2 High Frequency words which are words that are frequently used in writing and reading books but that cannot always be sounded out. Children then complete their individual Spelling Quiz on a Friday.
