MFL

At Middlestone Moor Primary Academy when teaching French, which is our foreign language of choice, we reflect the National Curriculum’s belief that we can liberate our children from insularity and provide an opening to other cultures.

Intent (Rationale)

At Middlestone Moor Primary Academy we feel a high-quality languages education should foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable children:

  • to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and
  • to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing continuing to build
  • to develop on their communication and language skills.
  • to develop their knowledge of the wider world understanding it’s global dimension

The aim of our curriculum is to equip children with knowledge of other countries and languages to support global citizenship and their understanding of equality and diversity within this global context.

Modern Foreign languages is taught from year 3-6 and the language we focus on is French. The MFL curriculum is plotted on a two-year cycle (Cycle A and Cycle B) in the 2022-23 academic year we are teaching Cycle A.  Each mixed age cohort covers the key aspects of their Key Stage (Year 3/4 and Year 5/6).   We use Language Angels to deliver our curriculum as this supports staff with planning and sequencing lessons and resources including videos to support correct pronunciation.  It also has a progressive approach to teaching phonics in French.
